What to Expect From A New Boiler Installation

What to Expect From A New Boiler Installation

If your boiler is over 10 years old, breaking down regularly, or quietly pushing your energy bills up, it's probably time to think about a replacement. A new boiler installation is one of the most practical home improvements you can make - improving comfort, reducing running costs, and giving you genuine peace of mind for years to come.

At SP Contractors, we carry out boiler installations across Leeds and West Yorkshire every week. In this guide, we'll cover everything you need to know before going ahead - from choosing the right type of boiler to what actually happens on installation day.

Signs It's Time for a New Boiler

Before committing to a replacement, it's worth checking whether you actually need one rather than a repair. These are the most common warning signs:

  • Your boiler is 10 years old or more
  • It needs frequent or increasingly expensive repairs
  • Your gas bills have crept up without explanation
  • Some rooms heat up well but others stay cold
  • You're hearing unusual noises - banging, kettling, or gurgling
  • The pilot light keeps going out or burns orange instead of blue
  • You're getting inconsistent hot water

If any of these sound familiar, replacement is usually the more cost-effective option over the long term.

Which Type of Boiler Is Right for Your Home?

The right boiler depends on your property size, how much hot water you use, and what your existing system looks like.

Combi Boilers

Combination boilers are by far the most common choice in UK homes. They heat water on demand with no need for a separate cylinder or loft tank, making them compact and efficient. They work well in smaller to medium-sized homes with one or two bathrooms.

System Boilers

A system boiler works alongside a hot water cylinder, making it well-suited to larger homes or households with higher hot water demand. It can supply multiple bathrooms at once without a drop in pressure - ideal if you've got a busy house.

Conventional (Heat Only) Boilers

Also called regular boilers, these require both a cylinder and a cold water tank. They're often the best option when replacing an older system in a larger property, particularly where the existing pipework is already set up this way.

Not sure which suits your home? We'll assess your property and give you a clear recommendation before any work is agreed.

The Brands We Install

We're accredited installers for Worcester Bosch and Vaillant - two of the most reliable and widely respected boiler brands in the UK. We also install Ideal boilers, giving our customers a range of options across different budgets and property types.

Being accredited with Worcester Bosch and Vaillant means we've met their standards for installation quality, which also means our customers can access extended manufacturer warranties. It's something worth asking about when you're getting quotes.

What Does a New Boiler Installation Involve?

Here's a general idea of what to expect when you book a boiler installation with us:

Survey and recommendation - Before anything is booked in, we'll visit your property to assess the existing system, take note of your hot water and heating needs, and recommend the most suitable boiler for your home.

Removing the old boiler - On installation day, we'll safely disconnect and remove your existing boiler, following all Gas Safe procedures throughout.

Installing the new system - We'll fit the new boiler, connect it to your existing pipework, and carry out any necessary adjustments. If you're switching boiler type - for example, from a conventional to a combi - there may be additional pipework involved, which we'll always flag upfront.

Testing and commissioning - Once fitted, we'll run through a full system test to make sure everything is working correctly and efficiently before we leave.

Handover - We'll walk you through how to operate your new boiler and thermostat, answer any questions, and leave you with all relevant documentation.

Most straightforward installations are completed within a day.

Why Gas Safe Registration Matters

It is a legal requirement for any engineer working on gas appliances to be Gas Safe registered. Always ask to see an installer's Gas Safe ID before work begins — any reputable company will have no issue showing you.

SP Contractors are Gas Safe registered, and all our boiler installations are carried out to the highest safety standards, with all relevant certifications issued on completion.
